The Project

Our clients based in South West London contacted Bakers Garden Builidings to help complete garden renovation at a classic mid-terrace property. Working within London terraces often presents unique logistical requirements, particularly regarding access. For this project, every single item and material required careful transportation through the main house. Despite these restrictions, we successfully delivered a substantial building that maximises the entire width of the garden, providing a seamless solution for both professional work and household storage.

 

The homeowners had beautifully developed their mid-terrace property and required a solution to separate work and home life while reclaiming storage space lost during a recent loft conversion. The office is now the business hub for Ruth Gaunt, owner of  a businsess creating One Day Websites. Previously working from a bedroom in a busy family home, Ruth required a dedicated workspace to maintain professional focus while remaining close to the family.

The Interior

The primary workspace is our Jay model, sized at 2.9m x 2.5m, providing ample room for a comfortable home office. The interior design is striking; the clients furnished the room themselves, choosing a 'colour drench' technique with Farrow & Ball Sulking Room Pink applied to both the walls and the ceiling. This is complemented by a stunning feature rear wall of acoustic panelling (Acupanel), which creates a perfect backdrop for video calls and mirrors a design element found inside the main house.

 

All our garden offices are fully lined and  insulated to the four walls roof and floor,  giving you a cube of insulation, this ensure the room is functional year-round. We installed Tennessee Oak flooring for a warm, durable base and a Wi-Fi lighting upgrade to control the internal and external lights remotely. Full high-speed internet connectivity ensures the client can run her digital business with continuous service.

The Exterior

To address the storage shortage, we created a bespoke, extra-wide storage section measuring 2.3 metres. Crucially, we constructed the rear and side walls using a fire-rated, zero-maintenance cement board. This technical specification allowed us to position the building right up to the boundary lines safely and legally, ensuring every inch of space was utilised. The front of the building is finished in our premium MTX 100 cladding.

 

We also paid close attention to the existing landscape; we carefully offset the storage door to preserve a mature tree, which softens the view of the building. To match the high standard of the main house, the clients upgraded to black aluminium inline sliding doors. These offer a sleek aesthetic and perfectly match the bi-folding doors at the rear of the property, creating a strong visual link between the two structures.

The Results

We are really proud of this project, it demonstrates our ability to handle challenging access to create a lifechanging multifunctional space which tands as a self-contained sanctuary that supports business growth and family storage in equal measure..
