The clients, having recently sold their business, wished to dedicate their retirement to spending quality time with their family, particularly their grandchildren. With existing bedrooms fully occupied in the main property, they required a hybrid space that could serve primarily as a cinema room but also function as a self-contained suite for occasional overnight stays. The site at the bottom of the garden required significant clearance to accommodate the main building. We designed an L-shaped configuration that connects the new room with a separate store via a continuous canopy.
To deliver this transformation, we relied on our Bakers Trusted Partners. TJM Contractors Ltd managed all groundworks and site preparation, while Oakley Landscapes handled the soft landscaping to integrate the building into the garden. The design also features premium clay pavers supplied by London Stone This layout creates a courtyard atmosphere that harmonises with 'Woody,' their existing log cabin, while the new building has been affectionately named 'Buzz' by the grandchildren.
We maximised the potential of this 30 square metre space and by incorporating partitions to create distinct zones, including a separate room, a shower room, and a toilet. The main living area features a compact and functional kitchen supplied by Elfin Kitchens, with all water and waste services expertly installed by Ben Street Plumbing.
The room focuses on a home cinema experience centred around an impressive 100-inch television and includes the installation of a multi-coloured LED wash lighting around the perimeter, allowing the ambience to shift instantly from a relaxing family setting to 'party mode.' To ensure year-round comfort, SubcoolFM installed a comprehensive climate control system for efficient heating and cooling.
Finished in Anthracite RAL 7016, the building utilises our Kite model base with significant bespoke modifications. The facade combines large full-drop windows with a Jay studio window in the day bedroom to suit the specific usage requirements. We aligned the base with the fence line, creating a triangulated space at the rear to discreetly house the climate control unit and the main electrical distribution box.
While the additional garden store acts as a standalone structure, we added a connecting panel and extended the canopy to link it with the main room. We utilised feature screens to enhance this connection, creating a seamless L-shaped structure that delivers the cohesive courtyard aesthetic the client desired.
This project successfully transformed a garden corner into a refined, multi-purpose extension of the home, proving that a garden building functions effectively as a fully equipped living space.
