A Complete Garden Transformation: Luxury Gym & Sauna Suite
What started as a straightforward home gym project turned into something far more ambitious a complete garden transformation that created a luxury wellness retreat in the client's own backyard.

The Project
The client found us through TikTok and initially had a simple brief: replace their old summer house with a proper space for a home gym and sauna, with a path linking it to the patio. As we started talking through the possibilities, the project took on a life of its own. Working closely with some brilliant partners we've collaborated with for years, the client's vision grew.
Why not transform the whole garden while they were at it? What began as a single building project became a complete outdoor makeover turning a blank canvas into a fully cohesive luxury wellness space that flows beautifully with their recent house extension.
The Building
They went with our Kite design, at 6m x 3.1m, which fit perfectly within permitted development rules. The tricky bit? Getting enough ceiling height inside for a treadmill without breaking the 2.5m external height limit for planning. We solved this with our recessed roof design which created the desired extra headroom exactly where we needed it.
The look was just as important as the function. The client had recently extended their house in RAL 7015 (Slate Grey), so we matched the building to it perfectly with the same colour cladding and the same finish on the aluminium doors and windows. The whole thing just seamlessly blends in like it was always meant to be there. We also upgraded the glazing to Planitherm Low-E glass with an anti-sun grey tint and integrated blinds, giving the client privacy, style, and protection from the heat & UV.
Inside the Gym & Sauna
Sally Otwell and the team at Motive8 handled the interior fit-out, bringing real gym expertise to the space. The TechnoGym MyRun treadmill sits right under the recessed roof where there's plenty of clearance, alongside a NordicTrack RW900 Rower and cable resistance machine.
The wellness side is just as impressive. In the corner sits a Sunlighten mPulse infrared sauna a top-of-the-range unit with ambient lighting and Wi-Fi controls, allowing the client to pre-heat it from the comfort of their home, and because comfort matters year-round, Sub-Cool installed a Daikin 'Stylish' climate control unit to keep things cool during summer workouts and cosy through winter.
The Garden Transformation
This is where the project really came together. Tom Manvell from TJM Contractors worked directly with the client to evolve that original 'just a path' idea into something much more ambitious. They cleared the site and re-turfed the entire garden for a fresh start.
The paving used are gorgeous Gromo Antica clay tiles from London Stone, laid in a 90-degree herringbone pattern with a double border to create a distinct seating area separate from the gym building. To balance all those clean modern lines, Guy Watts from Architectural Plants designed the planting scheme. The centerpiece is a stunning Niwaki cloud tree, underplanted with clipped evergreens that flow through the space and tie everything wonderfully together.
